Managing your Waste

As consumers, each of us are also producers of waste and rubbish. This puts pressure on our landfills, on our waterways, and increases the demand for the production of raw materials.

Here are some things we can do to reduce our waste production:

  • Compost yard waste and vegetable scraps
  • Store and dispose of household cleaners carefully. Don’t pour them down the sink, stormwater drain or into the ground. Instead take them to your nearest transfer station, or contact your local regional council for more information on disposal.
  • Give unwanted clothing and household products to ‘op’ shops or school fairs
  • Recycle paper, plastic, cans and glass
  • Write to mail order companies to get yourself off any unwanted mailing lists
  • Re-use scrap paper and envelopes - you can buy sticky labels which cover old addresses from places like Greenpeace or Trade Aid stores
  • Use recyclable containers instead of plastic wrap for freezing food
  • Put a ‘No Junk Mail’ sticker on your letter box
